"An alarming number of species have become "canaries in the coal mine". They're our modern day guardians of an unknown quantity, which represents the fragile buffer separating us from oblivion!"

 Joe Nogueira (26 Oct 19 ;)

Once found in abundance all over North America, many species are dwingling to a point where they're primarily found in protected parks, reserves or zoos. Natural habitats continue to shrink due to out of control development and exploration of non-renewable energy sources. Land, waterways and pristine forests are the first victims of these activities, followed by the impact on the inhabitant species.

Our insatiable hunger for energy and resources is the driver for this madness. Climate change is in part a by-product of resource and energy abuse and it's about to impact many more species, including our own! Although capable of surviving many natural disasters, most species are not equipped to handle our virus like behaviour. Of course, we need to explore resources for our own survival but, not to the point of decimating them, or at any cost and specially when viable alternatives are available!

Alternative, viable energy sources such as solar and eolian power are readily available, yet, we lack the commitment to implement them!

Our species dominates the planet because of our superior intelligence over all other species yet, we're not using its full power to manage and steer away from an obvious dead end path. Our brains must be asleep at the wheel! We allow our governments to circumvent these issues and allocate resources to issues of much lesser impact. War financing is always sold as a necessary evil to protect our way of life! Really? If there's no environment left to support the basics, what exactly are we protecting? Contaminated water, lunar landscapes and radioactive soil? Could it be that we're hypnotized by greed? Short term gratification has always been a well known blinding element for many, including elected officials. The Kyoto accord has not yet been taken seriously by politicians. So the question is: why did they bother negotiating and signing it? Did the exercise merely represent an all expense paid vacation to a foreign land so they could wine and dine with other hypocrites? Then again, if we elected these people, we definitely deserve them! Shame on us all! Their usual flow is more agreements, more studies and the endless delay tacticts! What about us, as individuals? Are we simply too selfish to concern ourselves with the conditions we're leaving behind for future generations? How will history describe our generation? Will our society be revered or damned? Generations past had the excuse of ignorance, they didn't have the benefit of educated scientific data from endless studies. What's our excuse? Who or what will stand out the most about these times? The leaders who steered us clear of a disastrous known outcome or the cowards who managed to find excuses and avoid the challenges? Cowards are making a mockery of being sworn into the public service for good governance. Don't wait for history to label them. Label them with your vote at the next opportunity! If anything, you can be remembered for standing up and being counted! "Lead, be lead or get out of the way" is a reasonable guide to follow if we're to get there.

Complacency is our most formidable enemy!

The past and present governments of the state of California (5TH largest economy in the world) have been leading in a way that would put any Canadian governments, Provincial or Federal to shame! They've legislated changes to ensure change occurs! They've realized that change is not an option and that leadership is not about popularity but about doing the right thing and doing it decisively in a timely manner! We need to support their actions and stop dwindling away with more insignificant talk!

Opting out of Kyoto is like opting out of our planet! Maybe some people still believe that the problem will go away or that someone else will be along shortly to take care of it! Some may even be foolish enough to think that the race for space will beat the clock to the destruction of this planet so that we can "hop" to another one and perpetuate our viral behaviour. It sounds highly unlikely and impractical to me! Besides, I like our planet, it has the right temperature, still has some clean air and water left in it, it sports glorious blue skies with white puffy clouds and moonlit nights with crickets singing but, for how much longer? Does anyone know?

"Common sense dictates that there is such a thing in nature's balance as a point of no return; not only is it unwise for anyone to pretend they know where it is, but downright preposterous to continue to tinker with it!"

 Joe Nogueira (26 Oct 19;)

What can we do to change this predicament?

Merely feeling sympathetic for this cause is no longer good enough! We must conserve energy! We must facilitate and promote the use of renewable energy sources such as eolian and solar power. We must use the power of our buying decisions and the power of our votes. We need to learn about these issues to understand the many challenges and you can start by following the links from this page. We must change our behaviour in respect to energy abuse at home and at the office or shop. Try this right now: write down two bad habits you have at work or at home that if changed will save energy. It's not that difficult to get going. It's not that simple either, you must carry it out. Making a difference starts with you! With additional reflection, you could possibly come up with many more ideas. If you run or work in an enterprise, the amount of energy savings can be substantial. Some people occupy positions that can have a much larger impact on energy savings. You can solicit employees for suggestions and get the entire enterprise involved. In turn employees become more conscious of their habits at home. The ball starts to roll. Your desire and leadership are key. The money savings don't hurt either and as you well know, money saved is worth more than money earned. Not that money was a concern before or anything, after all you've been happily waisting it until now with the status quo ;)

We need to support organisations committed to the common good and active on a large and visible scale. This support originates from the grass roots. It's time we give nature a break from us! Hoping is no longer good enough!

Immediate action by each individual is needed.
